I need longer days

Well, I should stop looking at my watch as I feel like I'm in a Mission Impossible movie and it's ticking too fast.

Too many things on my mind yesterday so I was up at 5:30. At least the dining hall is opened 24 hrs/day so I knew where to find coffee. Then headed for some gym time to get at least some exercise in my day as I know, from experience, that even best intentions are met with frustrations as things occur and another day could go by with no exercise. I need some of it as a great stress manager.

So between that early rising and getting back to bed at 1 am: lots of things happened.

Unfortunately what kept me going from one "need to be handled now" issue to another cannot be discussed here. It does make for quite interesting topics that are part of the responsibilities of being the CMO. Luckily, I have a great team working with me and we are able to handle them simultaneously. The work keeping me busy is totally different than a very bust shift in ER where we see 30-40 patients in a shift and are busy running around with acute care patient management. Here, between managing athlete's medical issues, new and chronic, I spend a lot of time with the tasks that are a combination of medicine / administration / politics. Making decisions and advising the decision makers requires so much detail before assuring we have all the correct and "up to the hour" information to make the decision....then we get an email or phone call which starts with "I need to get you an update..." and we are back at it with amendments. Just when I think I can get back to the office I get a text :"Team briefing at 7".....and it's 6:55.
Every group of our athletes and teams arriving in the Village gets to sit in a briefing detailing security, team operations and, my part, the medical services. As I have been in this position before. I actually enjoy these briefing. I see many familiar faces from other Games: athletes and coaches. It's always fun seeing them again. Except sometimes after the "Hey, great to see you again.." the conversations becomes: " Oh, by the way..." and another ball needs to be juggled.

I went to the men's WC basketball practice yesterday. The guys looks strong. Pretty aggressive practice even if they are getting shorter to taper before the competition starts on Sunday. I would be interested seeing when they are "harder". They are very motivated to do well here as they are still unhappy with they result at the last Parapan in 2011.

Today, hopefully the day is smoother. I have to check out the medical facilities at the Track where athletics will take place. It will be at the York University Track. I'll also head to the gym for the women's WC basketball practice.

The rest of the day.....hopefully be "medically" quiet.
